Fox Hunt

Sometimes names change slightly between directories - for example a first name might be revealed whereas in a previous directory it had an initial only.

However in the 1928 Kellys directory, the 1st whip at Ascott, William Bodington, appear to have suddenly acquired the middle name "Faux" - did he pronounce this Fox perhaps? Looks like this might be an affectation rather than a name he was born with...

William Faux Bodington was born in 1882 at Towcester. Possibly the son of a Robert Bodington and Lucy (nee Faux).

So definitely not an affectation then! Are you connected with this family? If you happen to know anything more about William's work with the Rothschilds I would love to hear about it.

I think Wiiliam Faux Bodington was probably a grandson of Robert Bodington and Lucy nee Faux (born1810 Merivale),rather than a son.

On the 1851 census Robert and Lucy had 3 children ....
Martha (8), Robert (4) and William 10 months. There may have been others, including Edward Faux Bodington (1840-1906) of Kenilworth, Kent and South Carolina.

Thanks Ayla! Can anyone find them in later census records? There is a William E Boddington born the right year in the 1891/1901 census from Finedon Northamptonshire, but Finedon's not in the Towcester registration district, his father is also Finedon-born, and his middle initial is very clearly E in both census records, so he looks like a red herring.

If there were family connections in the US, I guess our William may have been born in Northamptonshire but raised overseas.....

According to the IGI William Faux Bodington was baptised August 1882 at Towcester son of William and Kathleen Clara Bodington.

The 1881 census has William Faux Bodington's parents surname spelt with 2 ds at the Pomfret Arms ,High Street, Towcester. Kathleen already has 3 children under 3 (Frank, Frances and Charles).

I can't find the family on the 1891census at all but by 1901 William and Kathleen are in Maidstone Kent where William Boddington is running a livery stables. There are 2 younger children with them Kathleen Lucy aged 16 and John Harold aged 9. No sign of William Faux Bod(d)ington

Edward Faux Bodington, who was William Bodington's elder brother also settled in Kent after his return from South Carolina.

The 1891 census on Ancestry.co.uk has William Faux Bodington as William Faux Coddington. He, parents and siblings are living at Hove in Sussex where his father is descibed as a manager of a riding school.

Excellent work Ayla! It looks like the whole family took horsemanship seriously.
